NEW ZEALAND FALLOW BUCK
About our Fallow
The Whakatipu fallow deer herd is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and sought after fallow populations in New Zealand. Established in the late 1800s through early acclimatisation releases around the Lake Whakatipu basin of Otago, this herd adapted exceptionally well to the region’s unique alpine environment. The combination of glacial valleys, open faces, river flats, and native bush created ideal conditions for fallow deer to thrive.
Over generations, the Whakatipu herd developed a strong reputation for producing mature bucks with excellent palmation, clean symmetry, and deep coloration. Genetics, mineral rich soils and seasonal feed availability all contribute to the quality of animals found in this area. Bucks typically carry well defined palms with strong back points, making them highly desirable trophies for discerning hunters.

The perfect addition
The Hunt
The rut, which peaks in the second half of April, is the most exciting time to chase Fallow Bucks.
As autumn colours settle across the landscape, mature bucks establish territories and fill the cool morning air with their distinctive Croaking calls. This is when behaviour changes, movement increases, and opportunities come together.
We have access to a 36,000 acre free range property with great fallow hunting and great numbers of fallow deer. Fallow bucks in this area deliver great free range trophies.
We also have fallow deer on a game estate where large trophies can be taken.

A Destination Worth the Journey
