ARAPAWA RAM

A Unique New Zealand Sheep Hunt

Origins

The Arapawa ram is one of New Zealand’s most unique and recognisable wild sheep species. Descending from early sheep introduced by European settlers during the 1800s, these hardy animals adapted to New Zealand’s rugged terrain and developed into a distinctive breed known for their heavy curling horns, athletic build, and wide range of colour patterns.

Highly regarded for their rarity and character, Arapawa rams have become a popular trophy species for hunters wanting something truly different within New Zealand.

The Hunt

Arapawa ram hunting is typically conducted through rolling hill country, open tussock, and rocky terrain using spot-and-stalk methods. Mature rams can be surprisingly alert and challenging, creating an enjoyable fair-chase hunting experience suitable for a wide range of hunters.

Trophy Quality

Arapawa rams are valued for their unique appearance and historical significance rather than sheer horn size alone. Their sweeping horns, strong features, and distinctive markings make them an exceptional addition to any trophy collection.
