A Classic New Zealand Hunt

South Pacific wild goats are one of New Zealand’s most widespread and underrated game animals. Originally introduced by early European settlers and sailors during the 1800s, wild goat populations quickly adapted to New Zealand’s rugged mountains, hill country, and remote backcountry terrain.

Over generations in the wild, these goats developed into tough, athletic animals well suited to New Zealand’s harsh environments. Mature billies are recognised for their heavy horns, long capes, strong odour, and aggressive appearance, making them a highly enjoyable and rewarding species to hunt.

South Pacific goat hunts are typically conducted through steep hill country, rocky bluffs, river systems, and scrub-covered terrain using spot-and-stalk methods. Billies often inhabit rough country and can be surprisingly agile and wary once pressured.

Hunts can range from relaxed day hunts through open country to physically demanding pursuits in steep terrain, offering opportunities for hunters of all experience levels.

Large mature billies are commonly targeted for their horn spread and impressive overall character.
